How to Volunteer With Us

Why volunteer with Home-Start Glasgow South?

Our volunteers are the heart of Home-Start Glasgow South, and we wouldn’t be where we are today without them. Volunteers are often a lifeline for local families, making a real difference to those experiencing challenging circumstances.

Volunteers join us for many reasons, but all share the same motivation – the desire to help others. Volunteering can be extremely rewarding – only a few hours each week can have an immeasurably positive impact.

Parents who have been supported through our volunteer programme have often returned to volunteer themselves – an amazing compliment to receive for the work that we do.

Being a volunteer with HSGS has been such an enjoyable experience! Seeing the families I’ve supported grow in confidence has been lovely. Each families needs are varied which gives you a great experience as a volunteer

Home Visit

Our amazing volunteers support families, who have at least one child under 8, across the Southside of Glasgow. Home-Start volunteers use their unique skills and experience to help local families struggling to cope with the challenges of being a parent and day to day family life.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and generally help by offering emotional support and/or practical help – with the aim of enabling families to lead less stressful and more enjoyable lives.

Being a Home-Start Glasgow South volunteer can be very rewarding, with many of our volunteers building knowledge on working with children, young people and parents as well as developing skills to communicate with families in challenging circumstances.

English Tutor

Our English Tutors help work with parents and children to improve their language skills.
Our volunteer English tutors support parents to gain and build on basic language skills to give them confidence to get out and meet new people, enter education and find work.

English tutors visit a family in their home at least once a week and work on the parents language skills to ultimately benefit their children. The aim is for the family to improve their English language and abilities to help them socialise and become more active in the community.

Home-Start Glasgow South will support you to help the family you are matched with, however volunteers are encouraged to use their own ideas and experience to plan sessions. There is no set curriculum to follow but we have lots of tips and resources to build on in order to take a practical and active approach to tutoring.

Fundraising

Our fundraising volunteers have the opportunity to join and represent us in events throughout South Glasgow in order to raise our profile and funds for our charities work.

This could include running your own event, hosting a stall, being a friendly face to engage with the community at a local bucket collection, attending a cheque presentation or putting up posters. Your skills and personal interests will help shape this volunteering role and we will work with you to develop this fundraising journey.

Trustee

Trustees are responsible for our strategic vision and governance. We rely on our board of dedicated volunteer trustees to provide leadership and direction for Home-Start Glasgow South that fits with our values and ethos.

Trustees are responsible for the effective performance and management of our organization and ensure our governance is of the highest possible standard.

Volunteer Trustees must be committed to the charity and be able to dedicate necessary time, effort and independent judgement while working as part of the board team.
